Study Guide command words are boldface in the LOS title; the examiners expect that your knowledge reflects the command word.

The CFA® designation is increasingly becoming a pre-requisite for getting – or keeping – a job. Each year, more people are sitting for the exam, and the pass rates have been declining. No question, the examiners are making the test tougher, because they want to maintain the value of the designation. By purchasing this outline, you've shown a desire to want to be in the minority that passes.

The CFA® exam is a pass/fail test. I've taken a lot of pass/fail tests – two bar exams (New York and New Jersey), the CFP® and the three levels of the CFA® — and I realize that there is one underlying premise to success:

If you study, you pass.

It's that simple. But “studying” doesn't imply merely a cursory once-over reading. It means a level of preparation as though you wanted to receive the highest grade in CFA® history, even though it doesn't matter whether you pass by a lot or a little.

The CFA® exam covers a lot of material, as you've discovered. With so much material, the instinct for many is to try to read it as carefully as possible on the first go-round, because the prospect of actually having to read it again is pretty daunting. I wanted to offer an outline of the materials that follows the Learning Outcome Statements, because those are what you'll be responsible for knowing for the test.

When I first wrote an abbreviated version of this outline, the main reason was so that I wouldn't constantly have to lug all the books back and forth. I didn't have to consult the texts for the topics with which I was comfortable, and for the topics that had me stumped, I was able to read the outline in conjunction with a more thorough review of the assigned readings.

Here are two basic assumptions for best using my outline:

First, there are no shortcuts to success. The CFA® Institute does not want to devalue the Charter through inflation, so they will make the exam plenty tough. It is imperative that you do the assigned readings and the assigned problems.

Second, if you read something in the outline that you believe is not correct, do yourself a favor and check it against the assigned material. And if it turns out that the text was right and the outline was wrong, please do me a favor and let me know as well.

Most of the outline is in the same font as this introductory material. When you see something that looks like this, it is my editorial license that (hopefully!) makes the material a little clearer or represents my view of what you might expect to see on the exam.
